Francis Coppola Diamond Collection, Claret California Black Label 2006 $15
The Coppola Diamond Claret is kissing the top end of the Wine Witch’s $15 limit. I have found this wine on sale for $14-15, but truth be told the average retail is more like $17-18. Close enough for a quality red. For you greenies out there, the Copola wines are considered Sustainable, Organic, and Biodynamic although not officially certified as such. See my recent blog “It’s Not Easy Being Green” for some background on these terms.
The first point of confusion here is the name “claret”. I remember everyone drinking claret in some pretty dull English Lit I had to slog through back in the day. Claret is the name the British have given to Cabernet Sauvignon based red blends. While just about every red grape grown in California has a bit part in this Coppola Claret, Cabernet Sauvignon is at its core.
The 2006 Coppola Claret is a deep, deep red in the glass with a creamy mocha aroma. It has a full mouth feel and is quite dry. Give your glass a couple of swirls and the tannins are resaonably controlled. There is definitely wood in there, but it does not drown out the berries and vanilla - a definite plus in the Wine Witch’s book. You know her totally personal feelings about chewing on tree trunks.
This is a pretty big wine that was made for big, red meat. As value for money the 2006 Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Claret is a good one.
