Robert Mondavi Private Selection Pinot Noir 2006 California $12

By now I am sure you are used to the Wine Witch whining (I know - cheap shot - couldn’t resist) about the quest to find value priced Pinot Noirs that are satisfying. There are a lot of budget priced PNs out there - they just tend to be thin and dull. Fortunately, at the private tasting of Robert Mondavi Private Selection wines at the recent Harvest in the Square event, I found one I could recommend.

The 2006 Robert Mondavi Private Selection Pinot Noir is a nice find for $12 or less. You would not call it complex, but it is very pleasant and should hold your interest. Like all the Private Selection wines the grapes come from California’s Central Coast. While it is 76% Pinot Noir, there is a healthy dose of Syrah which livens things up a bit.

In the glass it is on the brighter side of ruby with some spicy aromas somewhere between pepper and nutmeg. It is a medium weight wine with a nice round quality. It has the expected raspberry and cherry jam thing going on. The black pepper kicks in again out the back - but pleasantly. Best of all, it does not have any weird flavors. I don’t know about you, but less expensive Pinot Noirs can taste like rhubarb. Love it in a pie - hate it in a wine.

This Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir is a lovely, season spanning wine that would go with a lot of dishes. I would keep it in mind as Thanksgiving approaches. Thanksgiving is always a wine challenge with so many dishes and flavors, and this one might just fit the bill.
