Veramonte is a group of wineries in the Casablanca Valley of Chile. They produce a lot of value priced wine, but lately they have been trying to bump up their image with a line of Reserva wines. They have also brought in some serious talent. Paul Hobbs of California fame consulted on this Pinot Noir, so it has a respectable pedigree.
If you have wandered into your local wineshop in the last week, it is probably stocked floor to ceiling with the Georges Duboeuf Beaujolias Noveau. This is absolutely fun stuff – the grapes were on the vine just a few weeks ago. If you want more background read an earlier post on the subject. Anyway, I bet most of you though this was all there was to Beaujolais, but you would be wrong.
You know how the Wine Witch loves a pun, so I could not resist this one. Zins, of course, stands for Zinfandel and the reference to 7 is the number of growers that contribued grapes to this effort. This is an example of a Lodi styled Zinfandel which is usually on the spicier end of this varietal’s spectrum. The Wine Wtich also loves her spice.
The Coppola Diamond Claret is kissing the top end of the Wine Witch’s $15 limit. I have found this wine on sale for $14-15, but truth be told the average retail is more like $17-18. Close enough for a quality red. For you greenies out there, the Copola wines are considered Sustainable, Organic, and Biodynamic although not officially certified as such. See my recent blog “It’s Not Easy Being Green” for some background on these terms.
Pinot Gris is the New World name for the Italian staple Pinot Grigio,. However, many California wineries are starting to call their product Pinot Grigio to avoid any confusion for the less wine savy.
The Wine Witch is not sure how many reviews you will see for Pinot Noirs in this blog. It is aboslutely one of the world’s most beloved varietals – the basis for great French Burgundy. The issue is price point. It is difficult to find good Pinot Noirs for $15 or less.
