The Wine Witch appreciates that there are magical pairings of food and wine. I recall an experience with smoked trout and a Preston Viognier years ago where I finally understood the concept. Most days however, I am just looking not to make a bad combo – say a tannic Cab with spicy Indian. Believe or not the hardest foods to make even a decent pairing are vegetables – especially the strong ones (which I love) like asparagus, artichokes, and brussel sprouts. Veggie lovers rejoice. The answer to your problem is Gruner Veltliner.
Gruner Veltliner is THE grape of Austria (read carefully – not Australia). It makes a crisp white wine with a backbone of minerals and white pepper that simply stands up to these bully vegetables. The 2008 Hugl is a very nice example. Also note that this is a 1 liter bottle. That’s like getting a third of a bottle free! Good deal!
As you would expect the 2008 Hugl Gruner Veltliner is very refreshing with a core of minerals and white pepper running through it. There is lime in the nose and on the palate. The overall effect is quite intense and concentrated. I would describe the finish as snappy.
I have had more elegant Gruner Veltliners. However, the Wine Witch rating system is simply bang for the buck. A liter of happines for around $10 deserves a 4.
