plastic1 Make Sure to Check the Expiration Date on Your Wine wine musingsIf you have been following this blog at all, you know the Wine Witch is not a snob.  At least I don’t think so. One of my first postings was about how screw caps are a good thing for wines not meant to age.  I recently came across an article in the L.A. Times that is making me question myself on this score.

Evidently plastic wine bottles are making some inroads in the value priced category.  Plastic?  Or maybe Plastique?  I am really having a hard time getting my mind around this one.  I will save final judgment until I have tasted wine bottled in plastic.  But still, PLASTIC?

Wine in plastic bottles requires an expiration date – like milk.  Supposedly, if the wine has not “expired” it will taste identical to wine from a bottle.  Plastic wine bottles are cheaper and lighter than glass bottles.  They are also bigger at 1 liter instead of the usal 750 ml.  In general the 1 liter bottle sell for about the same price as the 750 ml bottle.  This is probably a wonderful thing for restaurant house wine.  You never see the bottle and the restaurant gets two extra glasses to sell at no additional cost.

I guess I have already experienced wine in plastic.  If you ever had one of those 3 liter boxes with the handy spigot, the wine inside is housed in a plastic bladder.  I am not a fan of most boxed wines so maybe this is not a fair test.

If anyone out there has experienced wine from a plastic bottle and has any comments or recommendations, I would love to hear from you.
