morrell Morrell Wine Bar Cafe New York City wine musingsStats for this blog show that readers are scattered over a broad geographic range – as far away as the U.K. and Japan.  However, there is a large concentration of you in the New York (67%) Metropolitan area.  So at the risk of turning off some of you with no access to Manhattan, I want to tell you about Morrell Wine Bar Cafe in New York City.  As wonderful as this particular place is, it is more about the type of establishment and experience it offers.  Every city deserves a Morrell Wine Bar Cafe – in fact, it ought to be a law.

Morrell & Co has been a respected wine merchant in NYC for over 50 years.  They have a retail store in Rockefeller Center.  Several years ago they opened the cafe next door to the shop.  First of all, let’s talk about the wine.  There are 2,000 selections with over 150 offered by the glass – 10 sparkling wines alone.  For each of the wines by the glass there is a thoughtful description to help guide your choice.  Also on hand are the resident “wine geeks” who know their stuff and will walk you through the more obscure portions of the list.  This is a serious collection – no Kendall Jackson Chard or Santa Margherita Pinto Grigio here.  All of this is done with ZERO attitude – nobody is too cool for school.

Here’s the part the Wine Witch likes best – the pricing is VERY fair.  Most glasses range between $8 and $15 with a few higher choices.  The mark-up for a bottle is about twice retail which is UNHEARD of almost anywhere let alone Manhattan.

The wine alone is enough of a draw, but Morrell Wine Bar Cafe is also worth the trip for the food.  Relatively small menu with the most expensive entre coming in at $28 – again this is Manhattan people!  I would describe the food as New American with a French influence – but not frou frou.  You cannot go wrong with the ever changing cheese plate or selection of charcuterie.  Trust me, you will not get an attitude if this is all you order along with a glass or two of wine.  My husband and I add a pre-dinner meal there on Saturday before catching Celtic Women at Radio City.  Since then we have been talking as much about the meal as the performance.

Morrell Wine Bar Cafe is located at One Rockefeller Plaza in New York City.  It is a super place to expand your wine knowledge with no intimidation.  More well stocked wine shops should consider following their example and open a cafe.

Cheers!

No attitude from the “wine geeks”? A bazillion choices for wine by the glass? Does this place really exist? If so… sweet.

Suzie, the Wine Witch considers herself an enthusiastic amateur in the world of wine. She contends that nobody is born with a silver palate. In the beginning Suzie and her husband saved Lancer's Rose for a special night wine. She learned about wine by drinking it and making good friends with her local wine merchant. Suzie's wine adventure is guided by the following principles: * Life is too short to drink bad wine * You do not have to spend more than $15 for good wine * There are no rules - drink what you want when you want * Wine is to be enjoyed and not hoarded * Wine tastes better when shared with special peopleFull Profile
