If you are any sort of wino, it is probably old news that the 2005 Columbia Crest Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was named Wine Spectator’s #1 wine of the year.  What you may not know is this choice has generated a lot of debate .  A lot of it is along the lines of how could Wine Spectator select such a pedestrian wine.  It must be because Columbia Crest is one of their largest advertisers.

The Wine Witch’s response – So what?  Wine Spectator is not the holy bible.  This is no different than every movie critic coming out with their top ten films of the year.  If there was some sort of ultimate litmus test, all the lists should match.  Do they?  How often is one critic’s best on the next critic’s worst?  It is all a matter of personl taste, people!

Truth be told, Wine Sepctator is a lifestyle magazine that concentrates on wine.    The articles are fun and informative and the reviews can point you to some new discoveries.  That’s it.  End of the year lists whether movies or wine are entertainment.

Massive advertiser or not, I think Columbia Crest Wines are wonderful value for the money.  The 1989 Grand Estates Merlot was the first time that I realized you could taste chocolate in a wine.  I fell in love.  Unfortunately, you will not be able to form you own opinion on the 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.  They only made 5,000 cases and they are long gone.  Go out and get a bottle of the 2006 Grand Estates Merlot. You will not be disappointed.
