Argentina is coming on strong in the U.S. Most of you have probably experienced a Malbec by now, which is Argentina’s signature red. Less well known is their signature white, Torrontes. I happen to like Torrontes a great deal. They usually have an explosive floral nose and a complex flavor palate that can be a challenge to unravel. Unfortunately, all I can say about the Alamos Torrontes is that it is OK.
Alamos is the entry label of the well respected Catena Zapata. Most of this label’s offerings are $10 or less and represent good value for the money. I have read other reviews of the Alamos Torrontes and they are very mixed between the hits and the misses. It has a very distinctive taste and it is personal preference whether it is your thing – not quite the Wine Witch’s.
The 2008 Alamos Torrontes has a bold jasmine and banana nose. The flavors start as peach and lemon, but end (I am reluctant to say) with a bit of lemon pledge. To me there is a slightly bitter edge. It does have good acidity and we enjoyed it more with food (in this case polenta with a tomato vegetable sauce). Again, lots of people swear by it so try it for yourself and let me know what you think.
