Here is one New Year’s resolution out the window. I had resolved to break out of some of my wine ruts and explore more varietals, regions, etc.. This is a hard resolution to keep when it comes to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. These are not usually subtle, or very sophisticaled wines, but I just love them. Although they are Sauvignon Blancs, the New Zealand ones are their own genre.
The 2008 Babich Sauvignon Blans is true to its breeding. It is a very exuberant wine with a green apple and tropical fruit nose. It bursts into your mouth with lively acidity and the grapefruit note that is typical of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The finish is lengthier than most with a nice mineral touch that you don’t always get in a wine from this region.
If you like bright, in your face whites, it is hard to go wrong with a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Babich is a cut above many of them and worth seeking out.
