0409 bistro 150x150 B&Gs Bistro Wine Chardonnay 2006 France $9 wine reviewsIf you have been paying any attention, you know the Wine Witch in no way sees herself as a professional – just an enthusiastic amateur.  And while I hope you are a devoted reader of this blog, I encourage you to read whatever you can to expand your wine knowledge.  I know I do.  Anyway – while trolling the internet I came across a very enthusiastic recommendation for the B&G’s Bistro Wine Chardonnay and so decided to try a bottle myself.  All I can say is – WOW!

I probably would have passed this one up.  First of all, look at the label.  It is just too cute for words.  How could this be serious wine?  I have had other B&G wines in the past.  They were just not very memorable – decent, value priced French wine.  This is definitely a case where you cannot judge a book by its cover, because this is some terrific wine – for $9.

Now, if you are a fan of New World Chardonnay, be warned that this is an entirely different animal.  Neither the oak nor the fruit are going to hit you over the head.  This is an excellent representative of French Chardonnay which is far more restrained – elegant even – think sequined gown vs little black dress.

The 2006 B&G Bistro Chardonnay has a crisp apple aroma.  The apple carries over upon tasting  joined with some white peach and hazelnut.  However, the outstanding feature, and what makes it Franch, is the impression of earthy minerality.  You can taste the dirt – in a good way.  It compares quite favorably with French Chardonnays at 3 or 4 times the price.  It comes from Languedoc in the Southwest of France.  Base on these results I am going to seek out some other offerings from this area.

Unlike many New World Chardonnays, the B&G Bistro Wine Chardonnay is actually quite food friendly – mild goat cheese, white meat, and seafood.  The Wine Witch does not give out too many 5’s so pay attention here.
