The Wine Witch is still in the middle of her Spring Fling with Rose. Paul at my local wine shop had recommended two from France. About two weeks ago I reviewed his personal favorite, a Minervois. I like it and gave it a 4. I am beginning to get a sense of Paul’s palate. He likes his wines a bit more austere, while I like a little more fruit forward style. The Chateau de Bonhoste fulfills my need for fruit.
This Rose is from Bordeaux which is a region not usually associated with Rose. It is a blend of 60% Merlot along with 20% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It is a very bold pink tinged with a bit of salmon along the edges. The nose is very fresh with strawberries and rose petals. While lots of ripe red berries are present, this wine is still quite dry and fresh. Towards the end you sense the underlying tannins which give it a bit of heft but do not overwhelm.
The 2008 Chateau de Bonhote Rose is a winner and worth the effort to find.
