Here is a delightful Spanish Cava for the budget conscious. Cava is what Spain calls their sparkling wine. The Cristalino Rose Brut is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Tripat from the Penedes region of Catalonia. The Wine Witch needs to do a little research on Tripat – a new grape for me.
This Cava is a very pretty strawberry verging on salmon color in the glass. The nose is stawberries and raspberries with a yeasty tang in the background. There is a nice initial jolt of bubbles that linger. The main flavor is tart strawberries with a hint of lemon. It finishes almost completely dry with some toasty notes at the end.
The Cristalino Rose Brut is a steal at $9. I have even seen it on sale for around $6. It pronounced acidity would make it a good choice with fried appetizers like calamari or light deserts.
