Well hubby and I are back to tasting some new wines. We had two new ones over the long 4th of July weekend. They are both Sauvignon Blancs. I know, I know – the Wine Witch drinks a LOT of Sauvignon Blanc. Can’t help myself. I am like a bee to honey with this grape. I promise to widen the net over the next several weeks.
The first (and best) we sampled was the 2009 Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc. Initially I was a little confused here. I was hearing a lot of buzz about this Monterey California wine company called Cupcake. However, when I located a bottle it said Marlborough which is in New Zealand. It turns out that both are right. This is a California wine company that sources grapes from around the world. Like me, you need to get past the unfortunate name “Cupcake”. The name is just too precious and must have been decided by committee. The label is pretty non-descript too.
Despite all this, the 2009 Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc is some excellent wine. You know you are drinking a NZ Sauvignon Blanc, but here I would call it refreshing rather than bracing or aggressive. I would place it somewhere between the craziness of Monkey Bay and the refinement of Kim Crawford – the best of both worlds actually.
You have to like citrus with a NZ Sauvignon Blanc. Most smack of the zest or peels – but the Cupcake is just a little more subtle with notes of Meyer lemon and Key lime. It is just plain delicious with a zingy acidity that lasts from beginning to end.
The 2009 Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc would be a great match with all your picnic fare. Besides it has a screw cap, so it you don’t need to drag along your wine opener.
