OK, People. Listen up on this one. Remember the Wine Witch’s rating system is bang for the buck, and d’Arenberg “Stump Jump” has a LOT of bang. This one also received a 90 point rating in Wine Spectator and was named one of their Top 100 Wines of the Year – at $9!
Drink it blind and you would swear you were tasting a classic Rhone blend – and you are – only it is from Australia. The 2008 d’Arenberg “Stump Jump” (I haven’t a clue what the name is about) is a very harmonious blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Shiraz, and 10% Mouvedre. It is a very opaque ruby in the glass with an earthy, dried fruit nose. The wine is a bit fruitier than you might expect at first – just about every berry in the book. Shortly thereafter the layers unfold and you get the French minerals with some spice and just a touch of herbs at the end.
It would be a good candidate for your house red. Fair warning – this one is a bit of an alcohol bomb – 14.5%. Drink it at home with a loved one.
