I was surprised to find that Petite Sirah was produced in Australia. They are best known for Shiraz (Syrah or Sirah). For those of you that do not know, Petite Sirah is completely different from Sirah – it is NOT small Sirah. The Australians sensibly call it Durif to avoid any confusion, but label their exports Petite Sirah.
As you read this review, keep the price point in mind. This is a whole lotta wine for $7. This would be a whole lotta wine for $15. The 2007 DeBortoli Petite Sirah is inky purple in the glass – you can barely see any light through it when you hold it up. Definitely a chocolate note in the nose along with some dark fruit. Blueberry beats out the dark cherry when you first taste. The chocolate then comes in along with a bit of spice – pepper and clove. There is also an under current of minerality which is pretty rare in an Australian wine. The tannins are slightly firm, but not unpleasant. This is not a typical Australian fruit bomb.
Best way to put it. You can get a bottle of Yellow Tail Shiraz for $7 or you could get the DeBortoli Petite Sirah for the same price. Duh? Guess which one the Wine Wich would pick.
