gallopinotgris 150x150 Gallo Family Vineyards Sonoma Reserve Pinot Gris 2008 California $15 wine reviewsOK you snobs out there.  The Wine Witch can here you now.  “Gallo? Has she finally lost it?”  True Gallo does make a lot of jug type wine that can best be described as OK.  However, like all the major names in this industry, Gallo has a variety of labels at different price and quality points.  Sonoma Reserve should be a clue that they consider this one of their better offerings, and it is.

Before we get into the specifics of this wine, for those of you newer to the game, Pinot Gris is the same grape as Pinot Grigio.  In the North Western U.S. the grape is more commonly called Pinot Gris.  I am sure there is a reason, but I don’t have the energy right now to find out.  Wine Witch also needs to confess that Pinot Grigio generally is not one of her favorites.  A lot of it is just plain BORING.

Happy to report that the Gallo Sonoma Reserve Pinot Gris is NOT boring.  It is pretty lively stuff.  My guess is that to attributable to the 2% Gerwurztraminer blended in.  Gerwurtz is always a party.

It is a pale straw color with aromas of peach and apple that carry through upon tasting.  Towards the end there is a pretty sexy fig note.  It finishes very long for a Pinot Gris/Grigio.  The overall effect is very fresh and bright with slightly round edges.

Here’s that dreaded phrase, “Summer Sipper”, but that is exactly what it is, so what can I do?  I have rated it a 4 mostly because it is at the top of our price range and we are all about value for money.  However, the Gallo Sonoma Reserve Pinot Gris is REALLY nice.
