In reviewing this wine the Wine Witch has learned a lesson. Wines, like people, deserve a second chance.
Several years ago, I had Glass Mountain Chardonnay (do not remember the vintage) and really did not care for it. I don’t have my notes from then, but do remember it had a tupertine thing going on. Needless to say until now I never bought it again.
The end of the calendar year always brings all the various Top Ten lists. The 2007 Glass Mountain Chardonnay appeared on several of the 2009 wine lists, especially in the value priced category. I found it locally for $5.99 a bottle, so even if I poured it down the drain, I figured I was not out much. I did not pour it down the drain and I am going to buy some more.
What a pleasant surprise to say nothing of being a superb value. The 2007 Glass Mountain Chardonnay is a deep gold in the glass. Sometimes that means a lot of oak, but not so here. It is a well balanced, food friendly wine. There is caramel apple in the nose. The overall mouth feel is quite soft with flavors of apples and figs. Towards the end you get some toasty almond notes. I have had Chardonnays that have cost twice the price and not liked half as much.
We had the Glass Mountain Chardonnay with some crab cakes and it was a great match.
