Before we get too far this one is right on the cusp of our price point. I picked it up for $14.99, but if I look at prices online, I see a range of $12-18. If you can find it for $15 or less, by all means buy it. Much more than that and I am not sure you are getting all you can for the money. If the 2008 Hanna Sauvignon Blanc were $10-12, the Wine Witch would rate it 4 stars+. However, at $15 it violates our bang for the buck rating system. Hence the 3.5 stars.
Don’t get me wrong. I liked this wine. The grapes come from the Russian River Valley in California. The style is more on the grassy, herbal end of the taste spectrum which is more typical of California Sauvignon Blancs. The color is quite pale with a bit of green around the edges. There was citrus and hay in the nose. The overall effect of the wine was very bright and clean – almost zingy. It took my husband and me a while to identify exactly what were tasting. We agreed the main fruit flavor was lime zest followed by some mint and fennel. There was a lingering finish with just a trace of smoke and almonds.
The 2008 Hanna Sauvignon Blanc is a very nice wine. However, at this price I would save it more for an occasional splurge.
