I hear you now. There she goes again with another wine with a cheeky name. I admit – I am hopeless and simply cannot resist. I have to tell you though except for a Reisling named Polka Dot (trust me I never got that name) I have seldom been disappointed. I guess you have to be really confident in your product to take a chance like this.
The story here is that Mike Drash from Luna Vineyards visited the Friuli region in Italy which borders Slovenia. There he found some very unusal white blends. They were so different and so good that he “freaked out” and was determined to duplicate them back in California. The Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon Blanc were easy enough. The fourth grape was an obscure varietal from Slovenia called Ribolla Gialla. He did it.
The 2007 Luna Vineyards Freakout is a revelation. You first think you have a plesant summer sipper, but it just keeps coming with new aromas and flavors. There is a lot going on, but it all hangs together. The nose start with pears then lemon peel and ends with bakery note. The fruit profile is zesty citrus but with a mineral backbone and a dash of nutmeg for interest. It is very fresh and fleshy all at the same time. The Wine witch’s favorite descriptor for a wine like this – a party in a glass.
I know I usual suggest some pairings. Honestly, when I have a wine this fun I just want to savor it on its own with no food distractions.
