That title will get your attention. Let’s break it down a bit. Marc Aurel is the producer. Gruner Veltliner is the grape. I know – another one of those intimidating German names. Just sound it out – you will be close. This wine is from Austria not Australia – not a typo.
Gruner Veltliner is a wine wine almost exclusively produced in Austria. It is appearing on more and more wine lists here in the states. If you are outside major metropolitan areas you may need to have your wine shop special order. Please do. It is well worth it. Gruner Veltliner is very food friendly and reasonable both in price and alchohol content. If you ever go to Vienna, you aboslutely must go to a Heurigen bar in the hills right outside the city. There they serve their version of Beaujolais Noveau (only white) which is very young Gruner Veltliner. Lots of fun.
The 2007 Marc Aurel Gruner Veltliner is a great example of the varietal. It is quite a pale gold in the glass with a fresh grapefruite aroma. The grapefruit flavors are not heavy handed. There is also a bit of peach, a lively zip of white pepper, and a hint of a spritz. This wine sees no oak, so you are tasting nothing but the grapes.
Had a bottle (actually two) at a NYC restaurant the other night. Between the four of us we had pork goulash, grilled perch, and a white asparagus dish with German ham. It worked terrifically with all of them.
