For many years I though a Rioja was a RED Spanish wine. However, like France most Spanish designations have to do with region and not grapes. Rioja is in Nothern Spain. Although most of the wine is red, there is a white or Blanco. It is made from a native grape called Viura. The 2007 Marques de Caceres Rioja Blanco is probably the best at a $10 price point.
It is a very pale gold in the glass and the nose is mostly apple. The flavor is apples and some pineapple with a backbone of minerality I associate with French wines. The overall effect is very fresh with a lively acidity. The Wine Wtich is totally sick of this over used description – summer sipper – but it does tell you what to expect. This is a great summer sipper.
We recently enjoyed the 2007 Marques de Caceres Rioja White with some sushi and thought it was a smashing combo.
