Pinot Griogio is NOT the Wine Wtich’s go to grape. Don’t even get me started on the ridiculous price they get for Santa Margherita compared to the quality. There is just a lot of boring Pinot Griogio out there – not bad – just BORING.
My husband prefers whites over reds. We have been drinking a lot of Chardonnay lately and were ready for something a little lighter. Normally that would mean Sauvignon Blanc in our house. However, I am trying to stay true to my New Year’s resolution not to dismiss varietals out of hand. When I saw a bottle of the Mirassou Pinot Grigio cold at the local wine shop for less than $10, I figured there was little to lose.
I liked it – in fact quite a lot. It has a lot more complexity than most Pinot Grigios. Maybe because the grapes come from a variety of vineyards along the Central Coast and the Russion River Valley in California. The nose is floral and peachy. The predominant flavors are white peach and nectarine. There is a bit of a lemony zip that might come from the dash of Sauvignon Blanc added in. It is completely dry with a racy acidity – very fresh and crisp.
The 2007 Mirassou Pinot Grigio is a lovely wine. It would partner very well with grilled poultry and seafood. We had started our meal with a bit of goat cheese and that pairing was a winner.
