To me there are two fairly distinct styles of New World Sauvignon Blanc. This is the Wine Witch’s own classification, based on personal experience. True oenophiles would probably be horrified. I’ll call the first the California style – a bit more restrained – tasting of melons and peaches with a bit of grass. The other is the New Zealand style – nothing subtle about it with a predominant citrus, often grapefruit, flavor profile.
The 2007 Mirassou Sauvignon Blanc is from California, but seems to straddle both wine worlds. Its got a lot of the omph I associate with New Zealand with grapefruit and lime in the nose and first taste. However, as it unfolds there is some melon and just the tiniest trace of grassiness out the end. Nice acidity which makes it very food friendly. It paired wonderfully with a green salad that had avocado and a citrus dressing.
If you have followed this blog, you know the Wine Witch loves her Sauvignon Blanc. Is the Mirassou Sauvignon Blanc a great wine? No – but at $10 it is a solid value and I will probably have it again.
