The 2007 Murphy-Goode Cabernet Sauvignon does very well on the Wine Witch “bang for the buck” scale. Like more expensive wines, this one has a great nose, and an unfolding beginning, middle, and end. Fair warning – if you are in the chewing on a tree camp of Cab, you will not agree with this assessment.
The Murphy-Goode Cab is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon. However, the vintner has thrown in Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc for good measure. These other varietals contribute to the wine’s structure and complexity. There is a bright cherry nose with some spice in the background. The flavor opens with the cherries and then segues into blackberry followed by dried plum. Throughout there is a touch of thyme and bay leaf, which sounds weird, but works. The Murphy-Goode Cab is full bodied, but the tannins are supple (no tree trunks) and the oak aging weaves in vanilla and toasted nuts.
The Murphy-Goode 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is totally ready to enjoy right now. However, unlike many wines at this price point, it has the guts to age another 4 or 5 years.
