Evidently Newman’s Own Wines have been around over a year. I just never ran across them. Definitely a fan of his other products – salad dressing, pasta sauce, and especially the salsa. Anyway we were faced with a slightly over priced wine list last evening and the Newman’s Own Chardonnay was one of the more reasonably priced options – actually one of the cheapest. All his other products have been top notch, so what the heck we gave it a whirl.
We definitely should not have hesitated – a very nice, quite complex wine. I would not call it a typical Chardonnay – at least not a New World version. Maybe more French in style with more subtle vanilla oak notes near the end. The restaurant lighting was pretty dim so it is hard to comment on the color in the glass. The nose was tropical with mostly pineapple notes. The pineapple carried through joined by some pear and apple. There was a bit of creaminess, but it was balanced by good acidity.
The 2006 Newman’s Own Chardonnay might be best described as a crossover wine. It is a wine that both Chardonnay lovers and Sauvignon Blanc lovers could get behind.
