pinossimo 150x150 Pinossimo Pinot Noir 2007 France $10 12 wine reviewsJust spent a long weekend in Philadelphia with some friends.  One of our favorite places to hang out is the lobby bar at the Sofitel.  A relaxing atmosphere, tasty snacks, great wines by the glass – what’s not to love.

As you would expect in a Sofitel, the wines are mostly from France including the Italian sounding Pinossimo Pinot Noir.  This is not a very proper Pinot Noir from Burgundy, but a more raucous version from Southwestern France.  I will go into more detail below, but here is my one word review – Lip smacking!

The 2007 Pinossimo Pinot Noir is a deep ruby in the glass with a jammy nose.  Nice round tannins, the blackest of cherries, and some anise all come together upon tasting.  A little research revealed that the grapes are cold fermented in steel and only a portion is ages in Freanch oak while the rest remains in the tank.  Great call by the winemaker.  You get the wonderful forward fruit from the tanks and the spices and herbs from the wood.  It  just works and I loved it.

Is the Wine Spectator going to give this one a 90 – probably not.  But this is Pinot Noir from France for 10 bucks, folks.  This is a perfect bottle to bring to your next dinner party.  You will look terriby sophisticated.
