Whew! That name is quite a mouthful. Night Harvest? What’s that about? Well the folks at R.H. Phillips believe that harvesting the grapes at night produces a fresher, zestier wine. The theory goes that grapes firm up in the cool night air. Firmer grapes are less likely to split open during handling. Once a grape is spilt it begins to ferment, so you have better control of the process with night harvesting. It sounds terribly logical. Whether it is due to night harvesting or not, this is a very fresh wine with bright acidity.
The 2005 Sauvignon Blanc is a lovely pale gold with fresh cut grass and citrus in the nose. The initial grapefruit and tangerine flavors hold through the finish. There is no oak used which puts the fruit out front.
This would be a good alternative to Pinot Grigio for your lighter pasta dishes. It usually sells for around $8 and would still be a value at twice the price.
