If you have been keeping up with this blog, you will know that the Wine Witch is not the biggest fan of Chardonnay. I just have this thing about chewing on tree trunks while trying to enjoy my wine. Nothing wrong with it – just not my thing. So beware, if you enjoy big, buttery, oaky Chardonnays – this one is not for you. However, it is just perfect for me.
Last week while attending Harvest in the Square in NYC, I was lucky enough to have Angus Lilley, the Brand Manager for Private Selection, walk me through 4 of their wines. The 2006 Chardonnay, while not my favorite of the 4 (I will let you know my favorite in a future post), was the nicest surprise.
In the glass it is a paler gold than most with pear, apple and a bakery note in the the nose. As typical with Central Coast wines, tropical flavors predominate but segue into a crisp finish. There is a touch of spice, sort of nutmeg, which is always a big plus in my book. My husband swears there is anise in the finish, but I did not get that. As I always say, you taste what you taste and don’t let anyone talk you out of it. Yes, the oak is definitely there, but in sensible proportion. It lends a bit of creaminess, but does not overwhelm the fruit.
The 2006 Robert Mondavi Private Selection is a very food friendly Chardonnay, which is not a statement you can apply to many Chardonnays. I would serve it with creamy pasta, meatier fish dishes, and mild to medium cheeses.
At a $12 price point the 2006 Robert Mondavi Private Selection Chardonnay is hard to beat.

Sounds interesting – I’ll give it a try
For years all I ever drank was Chardonnay. I dunno I just like the woodiness, but I’ll try this one, too. It sounds pretty complex for a chardonnay.
