6b29bw7 150x150 Robert Mondavi Private Selection Vinetta 2005 California $12 wine reviewsWOW! This is a whole lotta wine for $12 (actually I paid $10.99) – a total 5 rating. If you have been reading this blog, you know the Wine Witch does not dish 5’s out very often. If you like big, in your face reds, but no edges, go out and find this one now.

This was the last wine sampled at the private tasting hosted by Angus Lilley of Private Selection at Harvest in the Square in NYC. I was totally knocked out by it, especially at a $12 price point. Before reviewing, I went out and got another bottle to enjoy under the controlled conditions at home – liked it even more.

The 2005 Robert Mondavi Vinetta is a bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. In fairness, I do not think this wine would be confused with a French Bordeaux. Let’s call it a New World Bordeaux with a fresher, more fruit forward style.

Vinetta is a nice deep ruby color in the glass with a great, big nose – dark plum and violet. All the dark fruits you would expect come together in the initial taste – blackberries, cherries, and plums. The fruit is joined by dark chocolate and a bit of black pepper and licorice – quite complex. Best of all it is absolute velvet on the tongue.

Robert Mondavi Private Selection Vinetta is a great wine for the carnivores in your life. It will stand up well to beef. However, because it is so smooth you could also pair it with heartier chicken dishes and stronger cheeses. Angus tells me that this wine is going to be renamed Meritage (more descriptive). Whatever the name, this is one not to miss.
