Lately, I have watching some PBS travel shows on Spain. It looks like a very cool place and put me in the mood to drink some Spanish wines. Spain has some very distinct growing regions, most notably Rioja which produces almost can’t miss red wines. For white, I would turn North and West to the Rias Baixas along the Atlantic Coast.
This area of Spain is also known as Galicia and the predominant white grape grown there is Albarino. Albarino is mostly associated with Spain although it is thought to be a clone of German Riesling. Alba Rino means ”white from the Rhine”.
The Salvenal Albarino 2007 is a very delightful white from the region that is priced right. It is pale straw in the glass tinged with green. The nose is quite floral with honeysuckle. It is bone, bone dry with crisp green apple and grapefruit. The wine finishes long and there is the barest hint of a spritz on the tongue.
The 2007 Salvenal Albarino comes from the Atlantic Coast, so of course its perfect pairing is anything from the sea.
