Here is a Wine Witch tip – some of the best wine bargains are to be found with the entry level labels of famous wine houses. Quality is quality. This wine is from Italy and one of the most well respected names in Italian wine making is Antinori. Santa Cristina is their entry label. The grape is Sangiovese. Can’t help showing off here a bit. The name Sangiovese is from the Latin Sanguis Jovis which means the blood of Jove or Jupiter who was the patron god of ancient Rome.
The 2007 Santa Cristina Sangiovese is a dark ruby in the glass with hints of purple. The nose is floral with bright berry notes. The fruit is quite intense with lots of tart red cherries along with some raspberries and strawberries. What elevevates this Sangiovese over Chianti in straw covered bottles is the addition of 10% Merlot. The Merlot rounds off the edges and pulls all the pieces together. It is a very lovely wine for the money.
A tried and true adage is to eat and drink local. Therefore, what is the ideal pairing with Santa Cristina Sangiovese? PASTA!
