This one will be pretty brief. There is nothing wrong with this wine, but there is not a whole lot right about it either. Santa Rita is one of the larger producers in Chile. This wine is from their 120 label, which I believe is the entry level. Here is the Wine Witch’s advice – for $4 or $5 more get the Reserva. So much better.
Carmenere is a variety primarily associated with Chile. At is best it is an earthy, peppery wine. Here not so much. The 2007 Santa Rita Carmenere is a deep violet red in the glass. Hard to discuss the nose, because it was a real alcohol assault with out much else coming through. The taste was just pretty ordinary – medium weight with some red fruit. What should have been some lively pepper came across as a not so appealing edginess. A little time in a glass did soften it a bit.
Again, it is not bad. You can just do so much better for $10.
