Here is another wine name that is a bit of a pun. Sawbuck is a slang word for $10 and the wines from this vineyard sell in that range. OK – got that one. However, the real reason for the name is the owners were down to their last $10 before they started achieving some success. Their philosophy is to “make wines we want to drink at a price we are willing to pay”. They also describe themselves as left of center of the mainstream. Attitudes like this warm the Wine Witch’s heart.
These vineyards are way up in Mendocino county which is more Pinot Noir country Maybe this explains why I like this Cab. It is definitely more fruit forward and not the mouth-sucking tannic style loved by many. Not a dispersion — you like what you like – just not the Wine Witch. This Cab has also been blended with a bit of Syrah (one of my favorite reds) and Tempranillo (a grape usually associated with Spain, but gaining some ground here).
The Sawbuck Cabernet Suvignon has ripe raspberries and cocoa in the nose that carry through upon tasting. The wine was aged in wood, but here the result is a pleasant toastiness and a bit of spice. These tannins are silky and soft.
The 2007 Sawbuck Cabernet Sauvignon would be a great choice for steak and burgers on the barbie.
