If you read the Wine Witch’s New Years resolutions, one of them was to drink more Cabernet Sauvignon. I am just not the biggest fan of lots of wood, tannins or edges in my wine. Many Cabs tend to have these characteristics, especially at our paltry price point of $15. However, I am a bigger person these days and feel it is my duty to find you some bargains in Cabernet Sauvignon.
I am happy to report that my first venture this year has yielded a good one. SKN is one of the labels under the Don Sebastiani & Sons empire. The name is a hoot – Screw Kappa Napa – it’s has a screw top. Oh well – it amused me. Anyway they bottled all the major American varietals with a suggested retail of $14.95. However, SKN seems to be on permanent sale in my neighborhood at $9.99.
The SKN 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon is a very deep plum in the glass. The nose is all dark berries with a bit of leather. Lots going on in the glass with blueberries, cocoa and a little bit of pepper. Now this comment is going to sound weird, but trust me it works – at the end there is a Starbucks Chai Tea Latte thing going on. Best of all for me – the edges are quite soft and I don’t feel like I have been chewing on tree bark.
The classic pairing for Cabernet Sauvignon is beef and that would work here. However, I think the ideal match for the SKN 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon would be lamb. Is this Screaming Eagle? Of course not – but it is a lot of wine for $10.

Found this wine and wished we had found sooner. My daughter got married last week and we would love to get this wine for their “Thank You Party” for all the helpers. Shellie & Nathan Kichler SNK Could you tell me where we could find.
Baldwin County , Ala between Mobile, Al and Pensacola, Fla.
Thanks for your note. I think the best thing to do is go on the SKN website. Often they have a list of outlets or you can contact them directly. Depending on the wine shipping rules of your state, you may even be able to mail order it.
