Anyone who knows the Wine Witch knows I love my New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Is this sophisticated wine? No. New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs tend to be parties in a glass and I am always up for a party. I didn’t quite find the party in this one. This is not a bad wine, just not the best in this category especially for the price.
Starborough is owned by EJ Gallo. It has a real eyecatching green label that really has nothing to do with wine. More about the marketing I guess. Here’s my main issue. New Zealand SBs are definitely in your face kind of wines. However, there is a delicate balance between lively and shrill, and for me this one is on the shrill end of the spectrum.
The nose is pretty classic with green pepper and citrus. It is a bit spritzy on the tongue. The pineapple and lime flavors are almost too much. The finish is anise and a little grass. For me it just did not come together quite right. However, I know a lot of people who like this wine.
At $15 suggested retail, this one is really not worth it. If you like an exuberant style of Sauvignon Blanc , one of my favorites is Monkey Bay.

Interesting! I loved this one, but I’m not a big sauvignon blanc fan, so I may have a different perspective on it. Sounds like I should try the Monkey Bay sometime. FYI, quoted you again on my review of it.
Agreed. In the same price range, Monkey Bay is the yummier choice.
