tempranillo glass beach 150x150 Tapena Tempranillo 2008 Spain $9 wine reviewsEldest son is a huge fan of all things Spanish – cuisine, lifestyle, and most especially the wine.  The Wine Witch does have to admit that I have never had a bad Spanish red – usually very bold, yet smooth and the tannins are held to a reasonable level.   Several weeks ago I reviewed the Tapena Garnacha and liked it, so I though I would try the Tempranillo.  Far from perfect, but the 2008 Tapena Tempranillo is a very nice wine for the price.

The Tapena Tempranillio is a youthful bright red with purple edges in the glass.  The nose mostly mocha with some jammy notes in the background.  The taste is chocolate covered cherries!  This may sound weird in a wine, but trust me it works and it is definitely not sweet.  It is medium weight and quite smooth.  The only thing that kept it from a higher rating is just the tiniest hint of a metallic edge going out the back.  Not at all unplesant, however.

I would consider the 2008 Tapena Tempranillo very food friendly given it restained tannic profile.  Even though it is a red, I think you should drink it within 2 or 3 years.
