Need to state once again that the Wine Witch has a certain prejudice for Southern Hemishpere wines. The focus of this blog is great value wines and it so happens that many of the great value wines come from the Southern Hemipshere. Probably has something to do with cheaper labor and production costs. While vitners in Argentina do produce some great boutique wines at a higher price point, there is a lot of good buys to be found, especially in the reds.
The 2006 Trumpeter Malbec is one of those value wines. It comes from Mendoza which is probably the premir wine growing district in the country. Malbec is also a grape unique to Argentina, but it can trace it original roots back to Europe.
This Malbec is a very intense purple in the glass with a lot of dark stone fruit in the nose. It is no namby-pamby wine. It is very big and very ripe. I would describe it as almost chewy and thick. Despite that, it is well balanced and no “gnawing on tree trunks”. Another Wine Witch prejudice – not crazy for overly wooded wines. Again my problem – if you like the wood – go for the wood. The Trumpeter Malbec would be a good match for slabs on red meat on the barbeque.
It this a great wine – no. It is a good wine for the money.
