Veramonte is a group of wineries in the Casablanca Valley of Chile. They produce a lot of value priced wine, but lately they have been trying to bump up their image with a line of Reserva wines. They have also brought in some serious talent. Paul Hobbs of California fame consulted on this Pinot Noir, so it has a respectable pedigree.
The 2007 Veramonte Pinot Noir Reserva is a stylish wine but on the light end of the Pinot Noir spectrum. The list is $17, which is a bit over this blog’s price point. I have consistently seen it on sale for $15, so I am sneaking it in. As the Wine Witch has said time and time again good, value priced Pinot Noirs are hard to find. Wine Spectator gave it an 88 which is a pretty high rating from them for a wine in this price range.
When you think Pinot Noir, you think cherries. They are definitely here both in the nose and in the glass. However, here it is more of brighter red cherries than black ones. It is medium weight and finishes quite dry with some oak, spice and, soft tannins. Yeah for the soft tannins! It actually reminds me more of a nice Chianti, than a Pinot Noir. So guess what – Veramonte Pinot Noir would be a great choice with Italian cuisine.
