In that rather long name, the varietal we are discussing is Viognier. A bit scary looking. The dictionary breaks it down to “vee-ohn-yay”. The Wine Witch must confess that I usually say “vee-oh-nay”. Nobody has laughed yet. Viognier was once a pretty obscure grape that is now gaining popularity. Like our friend, Pinot Noir, it is a difficult grape to grow. Australia is a up and coming area for this wine. While a white wine, there it is often blended with the ever popular Shiraz to soften the edges a bit.
Yalumba put Viognier on the map in Australia. They are a mega producer which several labels. The Y Series is probably their mid-point. The 2008 Viognier is a bright straw color in the glass with a very floral nose – mostly jasmine. There is a lot going on, but mostly I get musky apricot and some nutmeg. It finishes clean and is altogether a very pleasant wine.
Last night we had the Yalumba Viognier with some pulled pork (told you I was a peasant) and it worked quite well.
